squirrely sunday: away in a manger

Sunday, December 22nd, 2013

The bus I take to get home from work goes past a few interesting shops, including several antique stores. One day, last year, I noticed a display window in one of the antique stores was filled with taxidermy. It was a manger scene made up of taxidermied animals, except for the baby. It was one of those things that I saw, and was sure it wasn’t what I thought I saw. Surely, my obsession with taxidermy made me think I saw a taxidermied animal manger scene. However, the next day I saw it again. It was definitely what I thought. I didn’t manage to get a photo last year, and was so bummed out. This year, I was determined to get a photo! Unfortunately, the salt and frost on the bus windows make it difficult to capture a photo. Today, I ventured over to the shop to get some shots. I think if I knew more about my new camera, I could have eased the reflection action in the window. I still managed to get some great photos, including this squirrely one!
Taxidermy manger squirrels

A wee albino squirrel, and its fat and sassy grey neighbor were only the tip of the taxidermy iceberg! There were more squirrels, some raccoons, an armadillo, even a penguin!! To see the full menagerie, check out my flickr set here.

Once I have a larger collection of taxidermy, I think a Christmas tradition will be creating my own taxidermy nativity.

I hope your Christmas is full of unexpected delights!!!xoxox

12.8.13 Christmas Squirrel

With the coming holidays, I thought this was too perfect! I think that holiday decor can and should go beyond trees and brick-a-brack. It’s a great opportunity to refresh and update, even temporarily. I can see this little guy replacing a print or photograph in a frame as a festive little surprise. I may even have to splurge on him! (Or her. I respect the squirrel’s privacy.)

squirrely sunday: felted up

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

I know some aren’t completely sold on my love of taxidermy. I found this guy whilst perusing Etsy, and thought it was a lovely taxidermy look, without the actual animal part. The felting is lovely, and it is very squirrel-like!

A friendly reminder to check out independent artists and small businesses when shopping for gifts!

squirrely sunday: photogenic

So, my parents are super fantastic. They are generally super fantastic, but in this instance I am referring to their amazing birthday/anniversary gift to G and I. It really should be an every-holiday/event-for-a-few-years gift, but they think that anniversary and birthday is sufficient. We selected a fancy-pants DSLR camera a bit ago, and they offered to get it for us! The camera has been ordered (we wanted a red one, and they get fewer of those in than the black) and will be here later this week! So, very soon, I will be a photographer squirrel!

I am so excited to take all the pictures!!!!

come to an end?

We’ve been on a lovely vacation, but alas these are the last moments. Overall it’s been lovely. BlizzCon was the reason for the trip, and it was amazing. However, the real highlight was being able to go to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland during holiday time. They deck it out in The Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s incredible, and perfect, and it makes me giggle like a little girl. It’s ruined me completely for riding the Haunted Mansion at Disney World, and I dream of coming to California once theirs is transformed. This year was extra special because it is the 13th anniversary of them doing the holiday theme. So, even though the vacation has to end, I can keep thinking of the holiday Haunted Mansion and continue to giggle like a wee one.

What things do you think of that take you to that happy place? I would love to hear all about them!!

squirrely sunday: let’s go out to the kiiitchen…

I don’t really cook, yet I love a good apron. I especially love vintage aprons, but really, any apron that’s cute will do! So, when I found this adorable one on the H&M home site, I fell in love a little.

(You might want to note that it’s on ridiculous sale for only $3.95, and Christmas is coming. IJS.)

squirrely sunday: put a hat on it!

Sunday, October 20th, 2013

Yeah, I’m sure you read the title and thought of Beyonce, and started singing the tune of “Single Ladies.” Not where I was going, but that’s cool. I was thinking more like Portlandia and “Put a bird on it!”

I spent yesterday and today *finally* learning how to block hats! I already knew I wanted to go all crazy with the making of the hats, and this class was exactly what I needed! I also met a bunch of people with various useful skills (like tanning, and dying!) and it was super fun! I’m making my list of goodies to buy to make this a part of the ol’ accessory shop, and I will totally have a blog post this week chock-a-block full of the details of my first hat!

As with all the things I do, I already have schemed out how it will tie into what I already do. Taxidermy + accessories will be on the horizon. I found this darling on Etsy, that is good inspiration! I may kind of want it, even though me buying a hat at this point is kind of super overkill. Talk me down!!!

squirrely sunday: ten thirteen thirteen

Sunday, October 13th, 2013

It is officially my anniversary with G! Twelve years ago today, at this moment, we were celebrating our wedding. The time flies, for sure. That day, twelve years seemed so far off, yet here we are and it seems like a drop in the bucket. When we very first set our date, it was for October 5, 2002. However, we felt like that was so far off, and since we knew we were getting married anyway, why put it off??? So, we moved it up a year, and went with the 13. Because, ten thirteen. Because, we’re super nerds. Of course, if you’re reading this, you must be totally nerdy and totally get the reference, right? No? Well, ten thirteen is the production company that produced the X Files. The production company was named such, because it is the creator, Chris Carter’s birthday.

So, yeah, nerds. So far, we’ve had our ups and downs. Marriage is not easy. However, we made our vows, and we are sticking to them. Because, at the end of the day, whether it’s all fun and games or we’ve had a fight, there isn’t anyone else out there I’d rather snuggle into bed with at night. You know, on those nights when we’re both home and we need to sleep at the same time.

So, in celebration, I found the cutest cake topper, in one of my favorite colors. When we were married, we had pewter fairies on our cake. Now, we might have had these guys. In fact…I might have to get them on account of their loveliness. I’m pretty sure the traditional gift for the twelfth anniversary is squirrels, so it’s necessary, right??

Happy day, friends!

squirrely sunday: in memoriam

Sunday, October 6th, 2013

I’m taking some liberties with squirrely sunday today. A few years ago, G espied some Robo Dwarf Hamsters, and became slightly obsessed. So, for our anniversary I got him two Robos. Sadly, they don’t live so long, on account of their tininess. It took a while, but eventually G was ready for another wee hammie. This time, he chose a Russian Dwarf hamster. A wee albino, who was pretty adorable. G settled on naming him The Dude, because he’s a white Russian.

The Dude left us last night. We knew the day would come, because of their short life span. We were hoping we would have him around for at least two years, but it wasn’t to be. I already miss hearing him run in his wheel, and seeing him stand on his hind legs to drink water. He was a funny tubby dude, and we’ll miss him. We had a little ceremony today, and sent him off.

Thanks for the fun little guy.
