squirrely sunday: robb stark progress

Sunday, July 14th, 2013

So, I am finally getting around to sharing the progress on my squirrel taxidermy project. I decided that this will wind up as Robb Stark. I posed it so that it’s hands would be resting on a staff or something. However, a friend gave me the idea to make it a SWORD. Genius. I’m doing it. I first toyed around with the idea of purchasing a miniature sword, probably a letter opener designed to look like a sword. However, I remembered the lovely product Apoxie, and have decided that I will purchase some to sculpt the accessories for my Game of Thrones taxidermy projects. For Robb Stark, a crown and a sword. In the meantime, I have cleaned him up, and he is that much closer to Starkdom.

I know he’s not perfect, but considering the shape he was in when I started, I think he looks pretty good. He was hit by a car, and his head was squished. I was pleased that I could reshape it some. There are some bald spots from the accident, but once the crown goes on they shouldn’t be so noticeable. I don’t know what it says that the following is now a perfectly normal conversation around here:

“Hey, don’t use the toothbrush on my nightstand.”
“Umm, okay. Why?”
“Oh, because I used it to brush the squirrel.”

squirrely sunday: convergence is imminent

Sunday, June 30th, 2013

In less than a week, thousands of geeks, nerds, buffs of anything and everything sci-fi, fantasy, sciency, you name it, will “converge” on the DoubleTree hotel in Bloomington, MN for CONvergence. As a volunteer on the convention committee, I’ve been frantically trying to hammer out last minute details and trying to figure out how I will see the things I want to along with fulfilling my convention duties.

So, in honor of this festival of geekitude, I present you some Star Wars squirrels!

squirrely sunday: happy father’s day!

flying squirrel wrcmn

Isn’t that guy cute? Sadly, he’s an orphan. Luckily, the Wildlife Rescue Center of Minnesota is taking good care of him and his two litter mates. I am lucky that I have both my parents, and they are still married to each other. I have many people in my life who have lost their fathers, and my heart goes out to each and every one of them. I feel so especially fortunate that I just arrived home from visiting my family. I’m glad to be home, but I do miss my family already.

So, happy father’s day to my dad, and all the fathers out there. Much love!

sunday squirrel: taxidermy edition

Sunday, June 9th, 2013

I completed my second taxidermy project! These photos are immediately after I cleaned him up (he was in an accident, so I had to clean off lots of blood), stuffed and shaped him, and pinned him in place to cure. However, it was before I fluffed up his coat some to dry, so he looks a little mangy. I will post photos again when he is done, and there will be a post about my developing hobby coming soon.

In the meantime, what should I call him? I’ve already decided he is a Stark, so he needs a Stark name. (It can be male or female. I just refer to it as a he right now, though I am pretty sure in life it was a girl.) Let me know in the comments!!

squirrely sunday: commencement

Sunday, June 2nd, 2013

EEK! We’ve been celebrating my nephew’s graduation all weekend, and have had some internet issues, hence my post is delayed. It’s been quite the weekend, I think it will be nice to sleep in and relax tomorrow. I think my nephew will be thrilled to do so, as well!!
In the meantime, I came across this over the weekend. I really wish I would have thought of this!

squirrely sunday: so sleepy

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

This sleepy guy pretty much sums up my week! So sleepy, I slept in on this post!
We had a full, full, full week since last Sunday. The problem is, that when one is narcoleptic and not as young as one used to be, it catches up!
This week will be much more wide awake, though!

squirrely sunday: all painted up

This right here, is my first original art purchase. I have long been an admire of Emily Martin’s, of The Black Apple, for years. She creates original pieces, and sells both the originals and prints of them in various forms. I’ve had a hard time of hitting the trifecta of having a piece I wanted, the original being available, and having the funds. This squirrel was it! He’s from her Out of the Woods series. There were a couple of others I also loved, but they were outside of my budget. Besides, this guy is perfect. It’s a fat squirrel, wearing a red ribbon! He came framed in the lovely gilt frame, and ready to hang. However, despite ordering him at the end of March and getting him not long after, I only just got him up on the wall. I felt like I shouldn’t share until he was properly displayed.

Technically, I did purchase an “original” oil painting at the Starving Artist sale a while back, but I don’t count that. This squirrel is the official start of an original art collection! I just have to come up with a proper name for him.

squirrely sunday: happy mother’s day

two squirrels

Since I wouldn’t be posting this blog if it weren’t for a mother who put up with me until I left the nest, I figured a shout out was in order.

So, happy mother’s day to my mother. A pretty good mom, especially when I hear about some of the other moms out there. Thanks for putting up with me and my shenanigans all these years. Happy mother’s day also to my sister (mother to my super rad niece and nephews), my mother-in-law (who gave me the hubs), and my sister-in-law (mother to our wee niece). Hope it is swell!

I think this guy may have partied too hard! If you are out celebrating, make sure to hydrate and have a designated driver. I know I will be enjoying a margarita or two, myself! Cheers!!

sqiurrely sunday: no more sweater weather?

I don’t know that I believe it any more than this guy does. However, we did have to turn on the AC around here, and I am already whining (whinging) about the heat. I guess time will tell if spring has sprung!
