linked: bad ass women

Monday, November 18th, 2013

A friend pointed me to this story on suffragette bodyguards. Those women were tougher than you might have imagined!!

This piece about poor people and what they choose to spend money on really hit home. When people want to jump all over what they perceive as misspending, I will always jump in to speak against that judgment. This piece provides even more insight.

Once, on a bulletin board site I used to frequent, a woman was looking for suggestions for a good place from which to purchase a cake for her son’s birthday. At each suggestion, she offered another requirement her cake needed and why the suggestion wasn’t a good one. The requirements included vegan, sugar free, any sweetness had to come from fruit, and so on. When I read this post, I wondered if the crazy mom in question was the same person. Yikes.

Over on Slate, a suggestion to stop saying goodbye at parties. While living in the land of long goodbyes makes this tempting, I just don’t know that I can do it.

Finally, one for my job-seeking friends. Eleven reasons why I won’t hire you. Some of them are pretty specific to the newly graduated, but most are applicable across the board.

Just a few links this week, due to my spotty internets this last week. You’ll want to stick with them until the end, though.

This story about a how a waffle house that affected a whole town was fascinating.

Over at the Atlantic, take a look at the greatest innovations since the wheel.

The Fug Girls imagine a delightful conversation between two of my favorite people.

Some kids in France had a little too much to drink, and abducted a llama!!

Nubby Twiglet was in Queensland, and apparently hugging a koala is something you can do there! I know I’ll be scheduling a trip!

Monday, November 4th, 2013

So, last week my internets were down. Like seriously down. Like we had to have a tech come out down. So, I have double the linky goodness for you this week! Many spooky items to keep the Halloween & Samhein & Day of the Dead celebrations going.

I’ll start off with a non-creepy link: all sorts of ways Americans/the US is weird.

This photographer took portraits of her family through their belongings. Lovely and thought-provoking, it makes me realize more than ever the importance of one editing their belongings. I hope that one day the story my things tell is succinct and well-edited.

Now for something spooky, a woman was dead in her apartment for three years before she was found. A filmmaker was determined to find out who she was and how she could be gone with no one noticing.

This abandoned Wizard of Oz themed park recently opened for a day, as it does annually. If only I could get on that guest list.

Some of these old timey remedies are less creepy than others. I just know I will never take a cobweb pill or put ear wax on my eyeball.

I was fascinated by this history of the Ouija board. If I could get my hands on an old-timey one, I would be such a happy lady!

I got great enjoyment out of these highly unsexy Halloween costumes!

I knew the Chelsea Hotel was closing for renovations, but I didn’t realize what a mess the whole situation was. This history of the famed building is so interesting, it might tide me over until the whole thing is sorted out.

Meet the real Jessica Rabbit! Her clothes were just as daring and gravity defying as the animated version, that’s for sure!

Speaking of daring fashion, apparently Nicki Minaj has a line for KMart. These brave ladies tested some pieces in public, and I have to admit I kind of want a couple of the items.

This video from 1939 predicts fashion in the double aughts. I wonder if they could have seen that Nicki Minaj business coming???

This analysis of the career trajectories of Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence is amazing. I like them both, and I think K-Stew gets a lot of unfair flack. This, I think, really helps one understand why K-Stew deserves a little slack.

After reading about Blondie, I kind of want a living room lion of my own!!

I looked at this of unpopular baby names through the years, and I realized that all these whackadoodle names parents come up with have been around for ages. Not that I feel any better about it.

Finally, I leave you with this Friends game from Vulture. How well do you remember Friends?

Monday, October 21st, 2013

I read this story about the commotion about a fit mom posting an inspirational photo, and I was all, “WTF, mate?” I looked at this super fit mom with her kids, and thought to myself, “What’s my excuse, indeed!” Apparently, not everyone thinks that way?

I adored this piece at Never Undressed, with 21 controversial magazine covers that aren’t so controversial anymore. I didn’t understand the fuss over most at the time, and they seem especially innocuous now! (BTW, number 21 is my favorite. Stunning!)

A friend pointed this Buzzfeed piece on taxidermied animals. So very perfect.

So, Bansky had some art for sale in Central Park, for next to nothing. CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE??????

Finally, some stunning old timey circus ladies, courtesy of Flavorwire. I totally need that book, now. Not because I come from circus folk or anything. Why would you say such a thing? I totally do not come from circus folk. Probably.

linked: light load

Monday, October 14th, 2013

I feel like I’ve been spending all my time on my computer, yet somehow my links are light today. Sorry about that. However, I did find a few things that should help you start your Monday off right!!

This piece by the Smithsonian combines two things I love: the macabre and (not-so) tasteful bedazzling!

People Style Watch tries some As-Seen-On-TV hair products so you don’t have to! I kind of want a Turbie Twist now, mostly because this is the first time in my life I could maybe get all my hair in it.

This faux documentary on carnival rides is fabulous! If only it were real (and possible), I would totally ride some of those!

Whenever the word “literally” pops out of my mouth, I can’t help but think of Chris Traeger. Check out this list of every one of his “literally”s. Literally.

I loved this look at We Anderson’s female characters. What’s nice is, it doubles as costume inspiration just in time for Halloween!

Hope this makes your Monday a little more exciting!
xoxo

linked: gettin’ spooky with it!

Monday, October 7th, 2013

It’s getting nearer to the best holiday evar, so I must share some spooky treats I’ve found! Don’t worry, I’m mixing in some other things to help you sleep at night.

I’ve not jumped down the Breaking Bad rabbit hole yet, but I know many who have. Either way, I found this ad for the BB house that was placed to help hype the final episode to be crazy clever.

I adore Parks and Recreation, and every time a Perd segment pops up I am delighted. This interview with Jay Jackson gives some back story to Perd.

I love the story of a good haunting any time of year. However, this list of castles and mansions with tragic stories seems especially fitting now.

I love me some Batman, as does my husband. In fact, it’s part of what got us talking to each other back in the day! These imaginings of Batman and friends through history is fantastic.

The story of this lake is eerie, but the images are even eerier. I kind of want to go there…but don’t.

Finally, some costume inspiration. I think we need to get back to this type of costume, instead of trying to make everything sexy. Scary is so much cooler!

Hope you have a wonderful week!

I saw so many goodies over the last week!!

I have a love of costumes, design, and fashion, so this article about how costumers affect fashion was right up my alley!

Speaking of costumes, this piece on the costumes from The Great Gatsby was fascinating. I am in agreement with Catherine Martin. Costuming isn’t always about pure historical accuracy. It’s about evoking a feeling, and telling the story as the director sees it. I think she’s highly successful in putting period into context for a modern audience.

All the major meccas of fashion have been hosting their fashion weeks recently. I found some of these backstage tips useful for injecting a little more fabulousness.

I quite enjoyed Buzzfeed’s ranking of Shakespearean boyfriends.

Fine Shakespearean actor and Starfleet Captain, Patrick Stewart was married recently and the details are pretty amazing.

Among all the new television shows that are starting up, I generally thought Dads looked pretty not funny. Apparently, not funny is the least of its transgressions.

With every birthday that approaches, I find myself thinking about what my dreams really are, and if I am making progress towards them. This list of ten people who made successful career switches after the age of 50 is pretty inspiring.

Finally, I think Texts From My Cat is pretty hilarious. Even if you don’t have a cat, you might be able to relate.

Have a lovely week!!

linked: the call is coming from inside the house

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

A while ago, Famke Jansen reported a break-in. Turns out it was coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE. Or was it??

Marc Hermann took a collection of vintage crime scene photos and superimposed them on photographs of the location as it is now. The result is fasincating.

Hot Neville is hot.

I love this breakdown of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, aka. the mother of all dance movies.

After reading about how much a dollar bill can be worth, I think I will be watching my dollars more closely!

This list of the best public restrooms, complete with photos, is kind of amazing. I am proud to say the Twin Cities are represented!!

Have a wonderful week, friends!

Monday, September 16th, 2013

So, I figured I would go straight for the WTF? I mean, I can’t, my head, words? Six reasons NOT to send your daughter to college. *Note: You will feel like you went back in time. However, you didn’t. It only seems that way.

Now for some uplifting time travel! This is totally from the department of fabulous. Let’s be honest, our grandmothers did dress better! I think we should all try to bring back a little old school magic.

Another amazing trip back in time, a look at the Real Mermaids of San Marcos, TX! I am so sad I didn’t know about this place when it was around. It sounds like magic!!!

Now, I’m gonna slow it way down. This is one of the best articles about first-hand experience with abortion I’ve ever read. She really lays out why being pro-choice is a good thing.

And now, to bring it back up. If you’ve ever said, “So, that happened,” or are from Minnesota, or both, this Buzzfeed list of the 29 Most Minnesotan things that happened is for you!

Finally, I know the kids are all abuzz with this “What does the fox say?” business. I watched it. I don’t get it. I even held my vintage fox stole (with face and tail) to see if he could help me figure it out, and he couldn’t. However, this tutorial for a paper mache fox mount? I do get!!! I even think that those who aren’t obsessed with taxidermy in the same way I am will even enjoy this one.

Hope you have a great Monday, and an even better week!!

linked: deny everything

Monday, September 9th, 2013

Yeah, I’m on a full X-Files swing! Figured I may as well keep it going since I found this gem. Many of the folks behind The X-Files have gone on to create other fabulous television. Here’s a rundown of how to find the X in some of your favorite shows.

This is billed as the only photo you need to see today from NY Fashion Week. I’m inclined to agree.

After that shot of conventional beauty, here are six people changing the face of beauty. Though, I think they are more classically beautiful than we are led to believe.

If you know me, you likely already know I am all about dispelling myths and bucking popular knowledge. Here’s a big fat list of myths the public tends to believe about everyday items.

We are amidst the barrage of trailers for new fall television. If you’re like me, you may have a few that you are putting on your watch list. However, there are probably a bunch of goodies you’ve not heard of, or some that you are on the fence about. Here’s some extra input into the new fall line-up! Without this guide, I would have missed out on Jonathan-Rhys Myers playing Dracula!!!

The new NIN album recently dropped, and I may or may not be obsessed. However, I will say I am obsessed with this interview with the one and only Trent Reznor.

I don’t have kids, but if I did, I would certainly be like this guy.

I loved this look into the initial flop of the film, Clue, and its subsequent cult-following.

A little further back, there were some epic gimmicks employed to get butts in seats. I vote we bring them all back!!!

As one who has had to put a beloved pet to rest, I was moved by Sarah Silverman’s obituary for her darling pooch.

Finally, a terrible pun to officially send you into the week!

Happy Monday! I hope your week is amazing!
