I saw so many goodies over the last week!!

I have a love of costumes, design, and fashion, so this article about how costumers affect fashion was right up my alley!

Speaking of costumes, this piece on the costumes from The Great Gatsby was fascinating. I am in agreement with Catherine Martin. Costuming isn’t always about pure historical accuracy. It’s about evoking a feeling, and telling the story as the director sees it. I think she’s highly successful in putting period into context for a modern audience.

All the major meccas of fashion have been hosting their fashion weeks recently. I found some of these backstage tips useful for injecting a little more fabulousness.

I quite enjoyed Buzzfeed’s ranking of Shakespearean boyfriends.

Fine Shakespearean actor and Starfleet Captain, Patrick Stewart was married recently and the details are pretty amazing.

Among all the new television shows that are starting up, I generally thought Dads looked pretty not funny. Apparently, not funny is the least of its transgressions.

With every birthday that approaches, I find myself thinking about what my dreams really are, and if I am making progress towards them. This list of ten people who made successful career switches after the age of 50 is pretty inspiring.

Finally, I think Texts From My Cat is pretty hilarious. Even if you don’t have a cat, you might be able to relate.

Have a lovely week!!

squirrely sunday: wait for it

Sunday, September 29th, 2013

So, Saturday Night Live’s season premiere was last night. As is usual with sketch comedy, there were some hits and some misses. A little flat overall, but there was nothing super painful, so I call it a win!

One of my favorite moments was this sketch about a classic film. I think if you watch it, you’ll understand why.

Have a lovely Sunday!

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

A while ago, Famke Jansen reported a break-in. Turns out it was coming from INSIDE THE HOUSE. Or was it??

Marc Hermann took a collection of vintage crime scene photos and superimposed them on photographs of the location as it is now. The result is fasincating.

Hot Neville is hot.

I love this breakdown of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, aka. the mother of all dance movies.

After reading about how much a dollar bill can be worth, I think I will be watching my dollars more closely!

This list of the best public restrooms, complete with photos, is kind of amazing. I am proud to say the Twin Cities are represented!!

Have a wonderful week, friends!

squirrely sunday: creeping in on little squirrel feet

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013

So I was trying to find a specific listing on Etsy, and it no longer exists (cue sad trombone). However, I did find this lovely necklace by Morgaine Faye. I would totally wear the hell out of it. (click the photo to see her shop!)

So, I figured I would go straight for the WTF? I mean, I can’t, my head, words? Six reasons NOT to send your daughter to college. *Note: You will feel like you went back in time. However, you didn’t. It only seems that way.

Now for some uplifting time travel! This is totally from the department of fabulous. Let’s be honest, our grandmothers did dress better! I think we should all try to bring back a little old school magic.

Another amazing trip back in time, a look at the Real Mermaids of San Marcos, TX! I am so sad I didn’t know about this place when it was around. It sounds like magic!!!

Now, I’m gonna slow it way down. This is one of the best articles about first-hand experience with abortion I’ve ever read. She really lays out why being pro-choice is a good thing.

And now, to bring it back up. If you’ve ever said, “So, that happened,” or are from Minnesota, or both, this Buzzfeed list of the 29 Most Minnesotan things that happened is for you!

Finally, I know the kids are all abuzz with this “What does the fox say?” business. I watched it. I don’t get it. I even held my vintage fox stole (with face and tail) to see if he could help me figure it out, and he couldn’t. However, this tutorial for a paper mache fox mount? I do get!!! I even think that those who aren’t obsessed with taxidermy in the same way I am will even enjoy this one.

Hope you have a great Monday, and an even better week!!

squirrely sunday: narcky?

Sunday, September 15th, 2013

This little girl is one after my own heart. Except that she’s a skosh too young, I could see heading to the pub with her for a beer. Maybe in a few years.

Yeah, I’m on a full X-Files swing! Figured I may as well keep it going since I found this gem. Many of the folks behind The X-Files have gone on to create other fabulous television. Here’s a rundown of how to find the X in some of your favorite shows.

This is billed as the only photo you need to see today from NY Fashion Week. I’m inclined to agree.

After that shot of conventional beauty, here are six people changing the face of beauty. Though, I think they are more classically beautiful than we are led to believe.

If you know me, you likely already know I am all about dispelling myths and bucking popular knowledge. Here’s a big fat list of myths the public tends to believe about everyday items.

We are amidst the barrage of trailers for new fall television. If you’re like me, you may have a few that you are putting on your watch list. However, there are probably a bunch of goodies you’ve not heard of, or some that you are on the fence about. Here’s some extra input into the new fall line-up! Without this guide, I would have missed out on Jonathan-Rhys Myers playing Dracula!!!

The new NIN album recently dropped, and I may or may not be obsessed. However, I will say I am obsessed with this interview with the one and only Trent Reznor.

I don’t have kids, but if I did, I would certainly be like this guy.

I loved this look into the initial flop of the film, Clue, and its subsequent cult-following.

A little further back, there were some epic gimmicks employed to get butts in seats. I vote we bring them all back!!!

As one who has had to put a beloved pet to rest, I was moved by Sarah Silverman’s obituary for her darling pooch.

Finally, a terrible pun to officially send you into the week!

Happy Monday! I hope your week is amazing!

So, I came across more X-Files goodness, and of course I have to share. Did you realize that The X-Files began twenty years ago???? My mind was blown. The nineties are still only a decade past in my brain. This interview with Chris Carter is fantastic, and the possibility of his new projects is so exciting!

Speaking of the nineties, I was obsessed with Sassy magazine in my youth. It was the only magazine at the time that I felt like I could identify with. I suspect my old issues are long gone from my folks’ basement, but lucky for us a dedicated reader has kept many of hers and is scanning favorite tidbits for all of us fellow Sassy lovers! It’s like I was transported back to my teenage years. The good parts, at least.

So, it turns out that criminals in the 1920s didn’t look so criminal. In fact, they were rather dapper. At least, in Australia. I kind of want to meet all the folks in these mugshots, now.

I opened this piece with trepidation. From the title, I was quick to assume the marriage was dissolved. However, upon reading, that is not the case. This is a lovely, heartfelt piece on marriage and making it work.

It is so rare that I meet a kindred spirit in the realm of home-ownership. This guys lays it all out, and I agree 100% (if it is possible to agree more than that, I sure do). Check out his five things you should know about buying a house. I did change my mind about having the amount for the house and paying cash after reading. I still believe you should pay cash, but now I realize you really should have twice the amount, so you still have a safety net. See, even I learned something!

Thanks to Regretsy (RIP), I already knew of the hobo wedding (and am still flabbergasted they didn’t understand what was wrong), and the South African weddings have made the rounds. However, I didn’t realize how truly offensive some could make their weddings! Turns out, the napster guy’s wedding was downright tasteful!

Soylent Green is people!!! We all know. However, the new meal replacement, Soylent, sounds interesting. After reading about this two week trial, I kind of want to give it a try.

From the world of fabulousness, these 101 fashion tricks everyone should know are extremely useful! (The title declares it for every girl, but there are many that any and everyone could benefit from.)

Finally, someone won Craigslist Missed Connections. This is a must read!

Happy Monday, friends! I hope your week is swell!

squirrely sunday: from germany with love

Sunday, September 1st, 2013

I worked with a lady from Germany for a number of years, and one of our pieces of common ground was finding squirrels adorable and charming. Before she moved back to Germany, we even spent an afternoon in a park photographing squirrels. I’ve been doing much cleaning out of my files lately, including old e-mails. I was going through e-mails at work, and found one she sent to me not long after she moved. She sent me this little fellow, hoping I would find him as cute as she did. Of course! Of course I think he’s adorable. Now, I hope you all find him as adorable as we do.
